Hay Street Chronicles is a collection of ten mixed-media and acrylic portraits crafted with various methods and experimental techniques by Carlos Tolentino from 2018 to 2023. Serving as a visual time capsule, this body of work examines the artist's triumphs and challenges during a transformative period when he fully immersed himself in downtown life, dedicating himself wholeheartedly to his craft. Utilizing a diverse range of mediums and experimental techniques, each artwork in the display tells a unique story, offering an inspiring perspective on the individuals Carlos has depicted and using their narratives to connect with others. Whether drawing inspiration or expressing pride in identity, each piece reflects a distinct narrative that speaks to the multifaceted connections fostered by the artist.

Inspired by Carlos's trip to his hometown in Mexico City after 26 years, reflecting on his personal life of 35 years. The painting pays tribute to Basquiat's iconic style, such as bold lines and vibrant colors, mixed with typography and realtime messages.

Carlos, unable to choose between the two influential figures painted both, creating a visual narrative that bridges the gap between the West Coast and East Coast rap scenes. This tribute celebrates the individual artistry of Tupac and Biggie while encouraging viewers to appreciate the collective impact they had on shaping the landscape of hip-hop culture.
